Need to change the email address associated with your YouTube channel on your phone? Whether you want to update your public contact information or the primary login email, this guide will walk you through the necessary steps on your iPhone or Android device.

Important Note: Unlike some other settings, changing your primary YouTube email address requires using a web browser and accessing the YouTube Studio website (not the mobile app).

Step 1: Access YouTube Studio in a Web Browser

  1. Open a Web Browser: Launch your preferred web browser (like Chrome, Safari, Firefox) on your phone.
  2. Go to YouTube Studio: Go to the following URL: https://studio.youtube.com/
  3. Log In: Ensure you are logged into the Google account associated with your YouTube channel.
  4. Stay on the Website Version: If prompted to open the YouTube Studio app, do not choose that option. Continue using the website-based version in your browser.

Step 2: Changing Your Public Contact Email Address

This email address is what viewers can see on your “About” page if you choose to display it for business inquiries.

  1. Open Customization: In the left-hand menu of YouTube Studio, click on “Customization” (the paintbrush icon).
  2. Go to Basic Info: At the top of the Customization page, click on the “Basic info” tab.
  3. Find Contact Information: Scroll down to the “Contact information” section at the bottom of the page.
  4. Update Your Email: In the “Email address” field, enter the new email address you want to display for contact purposes.
  5. Save Changes: Click the “Publish” button in the top-right corner to save your changes.
Step 3: Changing Your Primary YouTube Login Email Address (Requires Ownership Transfer)

Changing the primary email address used to log in to your YouTube channel is a two-step process involving inviting a new owner and then transferring ownership after a 7-day waiting period.

  1. Go to Settings: In the left-hand menu of YouTube Studio, scroll down to the bottom and click on the “Settings” icon (the gear icon).
  2. Go to Permissions: In the Settings menu, click on “Permissions”.
  3. Invite a New User: Click on the “Invite” button in the top-right corner.
  4. Enter the New Email Address: In the “Enter email address” field, type in the new Google account email address you want to eventually become the primary owner.
  5. Assign the “Manager” Role: Under “Access,” select the “Manager” role from the dropdown menu.
  6. Click “Done” and “Save”: Click the “Done” button and then click “Save” on the Permissions page. An invitation will be sent to the new email address.
  7. Confirmation by the New User: The person associated with the new email address will need to accept the invitation to become a manager of your channel.
  8. Wait 7 Days: For security reasons, you need to wait 7 days after the new user accepts the manager invitation before you can transfer ownership.
  9. Transfer Ownership: After 7 days, return to the “Permissions” page in YouTube Studio (Settings > Permissions).
  10. You should now see the invited user listed as a “Manager.” Click the dropdown arrow next to their name and you should see an option to “Transfer primary ownership”.
  11. Confirm Transfer: Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the ownership transfer to the new email address. You might need to re-enter your password.
  12. Remove the Old Email (Optional): Once the new email address is the primary owner, you can go back to the “Permissions” page and remove the old email address from the channel if you wish. Click the three dots next to the old email and select “Remove access.”

Important Security Note: The 7-day waiting period for transferring primary ownership is a security measure implemented by YouTube to prevent unauthorized account takeovers.

Conclusion

By following these steps in a web browser, you can successfully update both your public contact email and the primary login email address associated with your YouTube channel. Remember that changing the login email requires a 7-day waiting period for security reasons.
